DIY Paper Ornament

Paper ornaments bring a sense of warmth and nostalgia to the holiday season—they’re lightweight, budget-friendly, and endlessly customizable. Whether you’re decorating your own tree of home or creating handmade gifts for friends and family, DIY paper ornaments offer the perfect mix of creativity and coziness.

One of the best things about winter paper crafts is that they fit any skill level. Even simple shapes can look elegant when cut from beautiful cardstock or layered with dimension. These projects are also great for planning a relaxing craft night, making decorations with kids, or filling your home with handmade charm. And today’s craft—the Paper Ornament—is a gorgeous addition to any Christmas tree or home decor.

A paper spire ornament is a swirling, dimensional decoration made from layered paper parts that creates an illusion of a spiral or a complex globe when viewed from a distance. When assembled, it creates a beautiful 3D effect that catches light and adds a soft, elegant shimmer to your tree. You can hang it as a single ornament, create a full set as a matching collection, or use it in garlands, window décor, or gift wrapping.

The best part? It looks intricate but is surprisingly easy to make with a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette. With just a few pieces of cardstock and a bit of glue, you’ll have a stunning ornament ready to hang.

And here’s the variation I tried — it turned out fantastic, and I absolutely love it. All you need is patterned cardstock and gold cardstock. Cut all six pieces from both papers, then glue the patterned layer to the gold one to make each piece double-sided.

  • They’re affordable. A few sheets of paper can turn into a whole collection of decorations.
  • They’re lightweight. Perfect for filling up the tree without bending branches.
  • They make lovely gifts. Handmade ornaments feel personal and heartfelt.
  • They’re beginner-friendly. Many designs—like this spire—look complex but come together quickly.
